What causes it?
Acne develops as a result of blockages in follicles, over-activity of sebaceous and the presence of bacteria.
Several factors are known to be linked to acne:
- Family/Genetic history
The tendency to develop acne runs in families. For example, school-age boys with acne often have other members in their family with acne as well. A family history of acne is associated with an earlier occurrence.
- Hormonal activity, such as menstrual cycles and puberty.
During puberty, an increase in male sex hormones called androgens cause the follicular glands to grow larger and make more sebum.
- Inflammation, skin irritation or scratching of any sort will activate inflammation.
- Stress
While the connection between acne and stress has been debated, scientific research indicates that 'increased acne severity' is 'significantly associated with increased stress levels'. Development of acne in later years is uncommon, although this is the age group for Rosacea, which may have similar appearances.
- Dietary habit
Certain high fat and / or sugary food can lead to some people getting an acne flare-up.
Types of Treatment
We use many methods at the clinic to treat acne. These vary from medication to jet peeling, glycolic peeling and laser treatments. Usually multiple treatments are required. Four to six visits to the clinic is a guideline for a course of treatment with an interval of one to two weeks between treatments. Every patient is different and your nurse will explain further what treatment plan is best for you, exactly what the treatment entails and what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Treatment time from 20-60 minutes.
