Introduction
Oversized breasts can cause a lot of discomfort. They can disrupt regular routines such as sleeping, cause back pain and also make women very self-conscious about their image. Women who experience these difficulties can undergo a Breast Reduction, also known as a reduction mammaplasty. This procedure not only reduces the size of the breasts, but also improves their shape.
Procedure
Your surgeon will remove the excess breast,
fat and skin tissue while shaping and repositioning the breasts
in a procedure that takes 2½ to 3½ hours. The result will
be smaller breasts, more in proportion with the rest of your
body, its likely also that your breast shape will be significantly
improved after the operation.
Recovery
Breast
Reduction requires a stay of 1 to 2 days in hospital.
Patients are usually back on their feet after a couple of
days and back in work after about two weeks. You may experience
some discomfort for a couple of days. At River Medical post
operative care is unlimited and we will ensure that you have
all the care, support and advice that you need during your
recovery.
Post-Operative Care
River
Medical offers post-operative support to all our patients,
and you will be advised of the actions you can take to aid
a speedy recovery. You will be required to wear a bra that
offers extra support for several weeks after the procedure.
During your recovery period, you will have several post operative
checks to ensure that everything is settling normally and
also to answer any questions that you have.
Benefits
- Improved body proportion.
- Reduced strain on neck and back.
- Improved position of breasts.
- Improved posture and self-confidence.
Is this right for me?
Suitable candidates for breast reduction
are of a healthy frame of mind, in possession of realistic
expectations.
Things to Consider
It is important that you carefully consider
any cosmetic surgery procedure. Your nurse will be pleased
to answer any questions during your consultation and leading
up to the procedure. During you consultation, your consultant
will listen to your expectation of breast
reduction surgery and from there you and he will discuss
what result is possible for you, this will ensure that you
have realistic view of the surgery and therefore know what
to expect post operatively.
What are the risks?
Breast Reduction is a safe and common procedure.
As with all surgery there are some risks to consider. When
your surgeon has looked through your medical history he will
explain all risks that are relevant to you. It is important
to understand all aspects of the surgery before proceeding,
this ensures that you are considering surgery and agreeing
to it with full and informed consent.
Questions to ask the doctor
- Will there be scarring?
- Will it affect my ability to
breast feed?
- Can I see before & after photos?
- Are you on the specialist register?
- Do you live in Ireland?
- How many of these procedures
have you done and how often to you do them?
- What kind of aftercare can I
expect?
- Where do I have my operation?
