Q&A WITH VALERIE GEAL, DERMAL CLINICIAN

What takes place at a skin consultation?
In 30 a minute consultation, I go through the client’s full home care regime as sometimes tweaking what you are doing at home can make a huge difference to your skin. I will assess the condition of their skin, looking at 3 different areas: skins secretion, texture and colour. I will also ask a client about their skin history ie previous treatments, what did and didn’t work etc. I will ask about their individual skin concerns and taking all of this into account, I create a treatment plan that really will deliver results.
What about products, do you find many of your clients use the wrong/unsuitable products?
A lot of clients only use SPF in makeup/ moisturiser and also think it’s only for the beach. Over exfoliation using scrubs, and using mass/ cheaply produced products expecting a clinical outcome is a common one also.
How can we tell we’re using the wrong products?
Firstly if your skin is squeaky clean post cleansing you’ve gone too far! Secondly if the product hasn’t made a visible difference in a few weeks isn’t not doing a good job.
What’s your current hero product?
I LOVE Alumier moisture matte in sand. I no longer use foundation as this has just enough coverage for daytime. Aha Renewal is my night-time fave and Alumier hydracalm is AMAZING for summer it has niacinamide to boost skins immunity and encourages healthy and balanced oil production, reduces redness and has hyaluronic acid to hydrate.
Do YOU use a separate SPF?
ABSOLUTLY- every day of the year. I don’t use moisturiser.
What’s the typical/most common skin complaint you come across and how soon before your patient/client typically sees results?
Dehydrated skin and rosacea are really common. Dehydration is usually repairable within a week, unfortunately Rosacea can take a few weeks but the good news is that I get result with all of my clients.
What can we do at home to improve the quality of our skin?
STOP using exfoliating scrubs, limit using a cleanser to once in the evening and use an AHA serum and a retinol daily (you need to work up to using daily and you also need to be religious in using your SPF when using a retinol but I will go through this in detail at consultation).
What treatment for you delivers immediate results?
Peels will improve dry/ dehydrated skin immediately, fraxel is phenomenal for sun damage improvements seen in 5 days.
What’s your favourite piece of skin advice you ever received and do you follow it?
I have acne / oily skin, using a lipid friendly non stripping cleanser literally changed my skin within a few weeks.
Any skin myths you’d like to de-bunk?
Oh so many! Coconut oil is for cooking not your face. Let’s also get rid of the ‘cleanse, tone and moisturise’ idea, skin care has advanced so much and our products are getting more and more clever and hard working; instead let’s think ‘respect, nourish and repair the epidermis’ as this leads to overall healthier skin.
