Gynecomastia is the clinical term applied to excess development of chest tissue in men. The cause is not generally known and it can result in significant anxiety and self-consciousness. Although it’s a subject that men rarely talk about it is quite a common condition. During puberty most teenage boys will develop fatty tissue around the chest or “breast” area which for about 90% usually subsides naturally within a year or so. For the remaining 10% of men it can remain for the rest of their adult lives. The severity of the condition varies with each individual. For many men the most simple and effective way of correcting this is using liposuction which removes the pockets of fat that have developed in the chest area.-

Procedure of Male Chest Reduction

Procedure

Male breast reduction or “gynecomastia” removes tissue and in extreme cases excess skin; and can improve the appearance of the chest in cases where diet and exercise have failed. The technique performed by your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will depend on the degree and extent of the enlargement. Options include removal of the tissue under the breast or liposuction of the chest wall. In both instances, a small incision is made on the lower half of the nipple area (areola).

A key aspect of preparing for any surgery is that your Surgeon understands your desires and expectations. At your initial consultation, your Consultant will explain the procedure in great detail, discuss your expectations and what he/she can achieve for you, ensuring you have realistic expectations of the results.
Your Surgeon will also want to evaluate your current physical health and health history, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Because this is an elective procedure, you and your Surgeon will naturally carefully discuss the benefits and risks involved, as is the case with any surgical procedure.-

During the procedure, your Surgeon will make an incision, usually around the aereola for best results. The incision site may vary depending on your individual needs. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes between one and two hours. All River Medical surgical procedures involve an overnight hospital stay to allow us to closely monitor your recovery and ensure optimum safety. After all, a hospital environment is the safest and only adequate place to deal with any potential eventualities.-

Typically you will stay overnight in hospital after your procedure. You will need someone to take you home when you are discharged by the Surgeon as you will not be able to drive. You may have some dressings around your chest or elasticised bandage depending on your surgeon's preference. Your Surgeon can tell you more about the typical recovery process and may make recommendations based on your individual case but by and large expect to take between 7-10 days off work. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently but you can rest assured that we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery.
You can rest assured that your Surgeon and nursing staff will be on hand 24/7 to answer even the most minor or personal of questions you may have.-

  • Am I a suitable candidate?+-

Gynecomastia is the clinical term applied to excess development of breast tissue in men. For many men the most simple and effective way of correcting this is using liposuction which removes the pockets of fat that have developed in the chest area. Your Consultant will assess your suitability and will recommend the best treatment for you at a free consultation.

  • How should I prepare for my procedure?+-

Preparation will begin with an initial consultation with your Consultant Plastic Surgeon, followed by a meeting with one of our Registered General Nurses. Each one will go through every aspect of the surgery in great detail. Prior to surgery you will return for a further comprehensive pre-operative assessment with your River Medical Nurse. Your Consultant will be available to you right up until your surgery should you wish to see him/her again.

  • Where will my surgery be carried out?+-

Your surgery should ONLY be carried out in a Private General Hospital that is fully accredited. A hospital environment is the safest and only adequate place to deal with any potential eventualities.

  • What sort of aftercare will I receive?+-

You should always receive FREE and unlimited aftercare post surgery. Furthermore your Consultant Plastic Surgeon should be a resident here in Ireland so should you need to see him/her in the weeks after surgery - he/she is available to you. You can rest assured that this is the case at River Medical.

  • Will there be scarring?+-

Our Consultant Plastic Surgeons use very fine specialist stitching which minimises scarring. He/she will discuss this in great detail with you at your initial consultation. He/she will also show you actual photographs of similar incision sites that he/she has carried out on other patients.

  • Why choose River Medical?+-

We are widely regarded as being the industry leader in Ireland, specialising in the most comprehensive range of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. At River Medical, we never compromise on the level of care and attention we give each and every one of our patients, every time, and we are committed to you from procedure right through to your 24/7, lifelong aftercare.

  • Why do you not have before and after pictures on your website?+-

Before and after pictures on websites can be misleading as they may not be patients of the surgeon who will be carrying out your surgery. As every person has completely different expectations, and different combinations of treatment requirements, it is a much more valuable tool for your Consultant Plastic Surgeon to show you pictures of surgeries that he/she has carried out and discuss similar cases to your own, as well as the results that he/she can achieve for you and your body.

Testimonials

The staff at River Medical really made me feel at ease, from my initial phone call to enquire about the procedure, to my consultation with the Surgeon, right through to surgery. It really was quite a straight forward procedure in the end. I would recommend it to any guy out there. I say why not do something about it, if you have a choice.
